Aden was the only active service posting around when I were a young wet behind the ears Gunner. I did apply 3 times for a posting, eventually the BC had me marched in and gave me a severe talking to culminating with the words: "If you go to Aden, the only way you're coming back is in a pine box!" at that point he ceremoniously tore up my application and told me to stop bothering him. I think it was Mad Mitch that inspired me.

After Aden and the disbanding of the Argylls, Col. Mitchell left the Army and became a war correspondent for a major London newspaper....his first assignment? Vietnam.

And look at the state of 'Aden' now. 'Mad Mitch' was quite revered by lots of working class lads even though it was a bit before my time.
I am not sure I would have liked to have served there though.
        It looks like Dodge City!

Got a copy of the Colonel's book here, 'Having been a Soldier', gives the story of the Battalion's role in Aden and the fight to keep the Regiment from being disbanded on their return.

I thought it was where he got his Maltese Cross.
How do you get a Maltese Cross? I hear you ask.
Easy - Just stamp on his foot.
