  • Gunner Stephen Nicholson, 55/49 RA

Came across a long forgotten cutting from an old edition of FortyNiner magazine:

I am sorry to say I have no recollection of him at all. He is on our ROH as 'cause of death unknown' so the least I can do is put the record straight. Stephen is buried in Carpenters Wood Cemetery.

Damn! I have a vague memory of hearing about this.
I have made the changes in the ROH and they will show when the next update is done.
    Rest in Peace Stephen.

Be who you are and say what you feel...
Because those that matter, don't mind.

Someone sent me this rather unflattering picture but typical squaddie pose of Stephen (hammering out the zzz's)

Just received word of Stephen's illness:

"Hodgkins or hodgkinsons disease is remembered from somewhere. he was getting up in the morning in Hohne and throwing up blood. On going sick he said he was told he was skiving as the Regt was in trg for N.I. and so this was left to manifest itself He lost a massive percentage of his insides through an op at Musgrave, and it took away his fight."

                          Words f****** fail me...

Bastards. Hodgkins disease is easily diagnosed even all those years ago. A quick trip to BMH Hannover for tests would have shown it. Some of those quacks who passed for army doctors in those days have a lot to answer for. All they dished out was medicine and duty.
