    Bootle cemetery, 19th August 2012

Looks like George has had another visitor since last August as there is a fading poppy wreath at the base of the headstone. Pity they didn't take the time to tidy up and cut the long grass but there you go, I haven't seen a wreath since I've been visiting so at least someone else remembers. To be fair it looks as though it was placed either in November last year or the anniversary of his death in January and the cemetery isn't the best kept one I've visited. (It was raining heavily on Merseyside today, hence the staining) I sat in the car after cutting the grass and placing a poppy cross and had a sandwich, see you again next year George.

06.00 on 23/1/77 saw the start of another 16 hour shift of 2 on/2 off doing the usual footsies, mobiles, sangars and standby in south Belfast, just another day. Then, just after we'd knocked off and wolfed down the obligatory egg banjo and mug of tea in the gasworks whilst heading off for our pits, at 22.08 the dreaded "Contact" was heard over the net. Soon after we heard it was a fatality and then who. The Battery went ape s**t as virtually everyone in the gasworks and Mission Hall followed up in hot pursuit and woe betide anyone who got in the way. Rest easy George and see you in August - Lest We Forget.

G, you told that straight from the shoulder, straight from the heart.
I could see the whole thing in my mind.
Thinking of George, and of you too G. And what it took to get to the point of being able to write it like that.
                        Respect.
