Palace Barracks.

A family member of mine, Royal Welch Regiment (ex RRW) is at present posted at Palace, and during a walk around the grounds, he came upon a plaque laid on a grassy area. Between 1973 and 1975, 1 RRW were the resident unit at Palace Barracks and they were accompanied on that tour by their Battalion mascot, Taffy 1, the Regimental goat. As is tradition, he was given a rank and a typical Welsh name which I am trying to trace, and was part of the Battalion strength. During the tour, he was present at many events and functions and a great morale booster for the accompanying families and local children. Knowing the mentality of the scum over there, it could be argued that he was as much a target as any soldier or policeman.
Sadly, before the end of the tour, Taffy fell ill and died. He was buried in the grounds of Palace Barracks and given a mascot's funeral. The plaque marks the spot where he was buried.
As is often said, they too served.

You might wonder about the info on the plaque. Taffy was originally the mascot of the Welch Regiment, but in 1969, through amalgamations, 1 RRW was created and Taffy was posted to them as their first mascot.
