    Military honours for serving in Afghanistan and Iraq

    Here is a list of all those who received medals for service in Afghanistan and Iraq for the period 1 April to 30 September 2009. They include two awarded posthumously to Staff Sgt Olaf Schmid and Capt Daniel Shepherd. Their names are marked with an asterisk. Names in blue link to BBC stories about the individuals.
    George Cross

    Awarded for acts of bravery of the greatest heroism or of the most conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme danger. Holders may use the post nominal letters 'GC' after their names.

    Distinguished Service Order

    Awarded for highly successful command and leadership during active operations. Originally instituted to reward junior officers in the Army, following a review it was replaced by the all service, all ranks Conspicuous Gallantry Cross. Although available to all ranks, the DSO is now awarded only to the more senior officer ranks. Further acts of bravery attract additional "bar" hence, the award "Bar to Distinguished Service Order" given to Lieutenant Colonel Angus Fair.

    Associate Royal Red Cross Medal

    The Royal Red Cross is only awarded to members of the Nursing Services. It consists of two classes. Recipients of the Royal Red Cross 1st Class are known as Members, while recipients of the 2nd Class are known as Associates. The ARRC is awarded for "special devotion and competency in the performance of actual nursing duties".

    Conspicuous Gallantry Cross

    Awarded in recognition of acts of conspicuous gallantry during active operations against the enemy. Was instituted in 1993 to replace three previous awards: the DSO (issued to officers), the Distinguished Conduct Medal (Army other ranks) and the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal (RN other ranks).
