The only saving grace was that those lads would never have known what hit them. The pressure wave alone from 1000lb of explosives would have been fatal. We've all no doubt seen photos of what a similar sized bomb did to a 12 ton Saracen let alone a Landrover a fifth of that weight with minimum protective armour.

The water was running free though the Culvert on that morning through images looking at it from information. It later transpired that wooden pallets had been pre liad prior to the Device being put under the Culvert. For how long no one will ever know!

The unthinkable happened and you can't stop the past it was happening. 2 Points of interest where of importance during the aftermath where of interest. A farm house sheep barn in ruinis LHS of contact point.
2nd Gorgesh Brush green with yellow flowers that smell sweet in Summer but a Soldiers nightmare to cross. A motorbike was heared in that area of Contact.

The Police have lost the great support they had under Operation Banner.
3 RUC police officers said after there car was blown up on the Newcastle Rd change over from Castlewellan that after surviving the bomb carried out against them they lay against a old stone wall for santury.
The sound was heard by us in BK at the morning cook house. All plates where dropped lock and loaded wee where on route straight thought the barriers at BK . New Snatch Rovers
screamed like life guards tearing up the tarmac and miles. Within 10 minutes after contact the Police officers heared the roaring of the Snatch Rover racing towards them.
I was the driver that morning and opened the door to a frightening site of a police car on it roof and a officer running to me. Bang the second rover took out a farmer's gate and flew up a 40% field like a rocket towards the firing point. Unfortunately they had fled to cover.

The best ever sound the 3 Constables said was the sound of that Rover screaming up the Newcastle/ Castlewellan Rd and the bottle of Whisky in the back.

Needless to say wee hammered local Para day and night relentlessly it must of hurt wee didn't give them a inch.

Us brothers in arms had been given a new officer to control us through the disare to control events after a bad few years.
His idea was to get back to basics and put men on the ground that where proud to say Honourable and hold there heads high again as Soldiers. TheBoss didn't take long to achieve that as the lads new he had our backs.
Range day after range day 100m 500m prone standing. 9mm Browning close quarter power training for off duties. He diddnt like the new P45 spud gun.
Again and again wee dry drilled the hollow in BK till it became a 2nd home. I could make ready that pistol with every part and my be only one hand on my body after that.

Next Coffee gentleman,God yes please but no this with nails was the new weapon. Pagers with Semites ext. It was a long year.

To our tears myself and 3 Brothers drove through Crossgar in a unmarked car toward BK minutes after the murder of a Part time Brother Soldier in his Family run butchers shop unaware of what had just happened. When wee turned out onto the Downpatrick Rd the QRF Helicopter buzzed us.

I never slepted for weeks after that knowing we where fully armed and could have saved our Brother.
STAND Down Gentleman said the Colour Sergeant.

Respect to our Officer response was No go and be ready in 5 my lads are finding the Murders that done this.
By F&G wee tore through the country side roads found the getaway bike on fire and location and knew who done it at this point. Stand Down Gentleman.

But the young officer moved to different Security Jobs and I hear still looks after his Brothers Wee Davy M.
