    Soldier dies after Afghan blast
A British soldier has died in Afghanistan after being wounded in an explosion on New Year's Eve, said the Ministry of Defence.

The soldier was from 33 Engineer Regiment (Explosive Ordnance Disposal), Royal Engineers, based in Essex.

The blast happened near Patrol Base Blenheim, close to Sangin in Helmand Province. Next of kin have been told.

His death brings the number of British military personnel killed on operations in Afghanistan since 2001, to 245.

Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lt Col David Wakefield, said there was "deep sadness" at the news.

"He was part of the Counter-IED Task Force, leading the fight against the Improvised Explosive Device in Helmand.

"His sacrifice and his courage will not be forgotten."

The 33 Engineer Regiment is predominantly based at Carver Barracks, in the north Essex village of Wimbish.

            Wootton Bassett

Everyone has the right to protest, but it's not a very tactful place to do it

            Councillor Jenny Stratton
On its website the group said it was "totally unacceptable" to honour servicemen who had contributed "directly or indirectly" to the deaths of "well over 100,000 Muslims in Afghanistan in the last 8 years".

"We at Islam4UK find this totally unacceptable and as a result have decided to launch the 'Wootton Bassett March' to highlight the real casualties of this brutal Crusade," the website states
Radical group plans march through Wootton Bassett
