    Gnr Frank Muller

Jock kindly sent me a picture this evening which includes Frank in his days at the Junior Leaders Regt, RA. Frank mustered December 1976 and turned 18 at the end of that month. Early January 1977 he was posted to 49 Field Regiment RA who were in Belfast. He was then sent to Ballykinlar for intensive NITAT training and at the end of the week’s course went out with a patrol from 32 Regiment RA for assessment before joining 49. On that patrol in the Ardoyne Frank was shot and killed this day - RIP.

Frank is centre, dark hair and a tooth missing.

A real sad story. He didn't even get a chance to join his unit at the GCH. 49 Regiment held a service for him at the GCH and it must have been the first time this was done for a member of a Regiment whom nobody knew.
    Rest easy fellow Gunner.

The picture is of the three times winners of the Army Major Units rugby team at JLRRA in 1976. I am in contact with the small lad with his hand in the crate of ginger beer - they taught us well...

I remember prior to deploying to Londonderry in November 1973, we had a Troop photo taken. I wasn't alone in thinking how many empty spaces there would be when we returned. Happily, only one and he wasn't a fatality.
