Pte. Michael Boxall Ulster Defence Regiment
The private from Ballykelly was killed when an IRA Mark 12 mortar device hit his Land Rover shortly before 9.30 p.m. It was part of a two-vehicle mobile patrol, travelling from Bellaghy to Portglenone, which had just turned a corner near St Mary’s Catholic Church. The mortar bomb was fired horizontally, hitting the second of the two vehicles. Private Boxall sustained multiple injuries and died shortly afterwards in hospital.
