  • UK soldier killed in Afghanistan

The death takes the number of British troops killed in Afghanistan to 233
A soldier from the 7th Battalion The Rifles has been killed in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said.

He was killed as a result of small arms fire during a foot patrol near Sangin in central Helmand Province, on Sunday morning.

The soldier was attached to the 3rd Battalion The Rifles Battle Group. His family have been informed.

The latest death brings the number of British troops killed on operations in Afghanistan since 2001 to 233.

Spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lt Col David Wakefield, said: "He died in the course of his duty.

"He will be missed by us, his comrades, and we will remember him."

A soldier killed in Afghanistan has been named as Rifleman Philip Allen, aged 20, of 2nd Battalion The Rifles, by the Ministry of Defence.

At the time of his death Rifleman Allen, born in Dorset, was serving with A Company, 4th Battalion The Rifles, within the 3 Rifles Battle Group.

He was killed following the detonation of an Improvised Explosive Device in central Helmand Province on Saturday.

His platoon was conducting a patrol to provide security for local Afghans.

He attended school in Dorchester and joined the Army in the spring of this year.

His mother, Karen Charman-Allen, said: "I would like to thank all of the soldiers who have served with and knew Phil.

"He was proud to have been a soldier in 2 Rifles and to have served on tour with them in Afghanistan."
